Leaders Programme: My journey so far by Annie Gibbs
A huge milestone for me was securing a place on the OurSpace Leaders Programme this year. It reassured me that people are willing to invest in me as a human being and value my passion for creating a positive change.
Since being on the programme, it has allowed me to build in confidence and so far provided me with valuable insight into some of the barriers that prevent the community from progressing and really shaped the way I approach leadership of others.
Being afforded the opportunity to go away on the residential training course has been an invaluable experience. Learning about the powerful impact listening to others to understand has been hugely beneficial, and has deepened my desire to want to push myself more to ensure that OurSpace helps to open the doors for more from the community to ensure their voices and ideas are heard!
The most valuable part of the programme so far for me has been practicing the facilitation techniques learnt at the residential and being given the opportunity to co-facilitate a workshop on Leadership of others: Harnessing community action at Activate! event in London. The feedback from attendees was refreshing. It was incredible to know that they felt we had enabled them to think more inclusively and humbled that we were asked by some for further support outside of the event to facilitate a follow up workshop at their places of work.
The programme has also taught me to push my own boundaries and I am proud to have worked on an unplanned outreach for the programme at the Lambeth Country Show with some of our team, where we engaged with the community of Lambeth to see what their needs are.
I can’t thank Steph and the other founders of OurSpace for the opportunity. I look forward to continuing the programme, and developing further as a leader within the team I am apart of to make Impact Brixton more inclusive.
